Worms and Vermiculture

The use of worms, or “red wigglers,” in aquaponic systems has been a growing trend in the last few years. The origin of this are fuzzy but can be traced to a few sources. First, in an outdoor system worm castings are bound to get into a system via birds feces, the farmer’s hands (if they work with soil too), or if compost tea is used. Second, it is a natural combination due to the power and popularity of vermicomposting as another highly sustainable farming practice85.

In fact, a pound of red wigglers can consumer ¾ a pound of waste per day!86 Vermicomposting is the practise of composting organic matter into compost with the aid of worms. It increases the speed of composting by up to 3 times, reduces odors, increases nutritional value of compost, removes toxic metals87, does not require aeration, and eliminates pathogens (after 60 days)88.
